AI SEARCH · EDITORIAL GUIDE

Open-Source Perplexity Alternatives: Vane vs Morphic

Vane and Morphic are two documented, self-hosted ways to search with AI-generated answers and citations. Neither is an operated version of Perplexity. The best choice depends on how much setup you want, which model and search providers you need, and whether you intend to keep model inference local. This comparison is based on official documentation checked on October 23, 2026; we have not benchmarked answer quality or audited either application.

The 2 best Perplexity alternatives to consider

1. Vane (formerly Perplexica)

A bundled Docker start with SearXNG

Vane's default Docker image bundles the app and SearXNG. It offers Speed, Balanced and Quality search modes, cited answers, Ollama support and several cloud-model providers. The official README also documents a slim image for operators who already run SearXNG. Choose it if you want to evaluate a self-hosted answer engine with a short initial setup path.

Local deployment controls where the app and history run, but external model APIs still receive prompts when selected. Live web results require a network connection. Our Vane project page covers the Docker command, Ollama connection details, API and privacy limits.

2. Morphic

A configurable search app with generative UI

Morphic is an AI search engine with cited answers and a generative interface that can render richer answer components. Its README lists Quick and Adaptive search modes, local Ollama and other model providers, several search providers, file uploads, shareable results and optional authentication. The Docker Compose path starts PostgreSQL, Redis, SearXNG and the application.

That broader stack gives operators configuration choices but also more services to manage. The README describes an environment-file setup and at least one configured model provider. Review its privacy and Docker documentation before exposing an instance to others; a local deployment alone does not prove that every configured provider stays local.

Privacy and hosting trade-offs

Both projects can run the application on infrastructure you control and support local Ollama models. Privacy still depends on configuration: cloud model providers receive the prompts you send them, search may contact outside services, and network access to your instance needs its own controls. Read each project's setup and privacy guidance rather than assuming self-hosting means fully offline.

Perplexity offers a managed service with free and paid plans. Vane and Morphic trade that convenience for deployment control and maintenance work. The software license does not cover compute, storage or paid model API usage.

Frequently asked questions

Is Vane the same project as Perplexica?
Yes. The former Perplexica repository redirects to Vane, the current project name.
Are these Perplexity alternatives free to run?
The applications are open source, but hosting and optional cloud model APIs can cost money. Check each project's license and the provider you select.
Will a self-hosted alternative work offline?
Local model inference is possible with Ollama. Live web search needs network access, and cloud model providers require external API calls.
